We are aware that a lot of people are obtaining the ‘Weight loss injections’ Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and/or Wegovy (semaglutide) privately.
As your GP we are not always made aware if our patients are being prescribed these medications, so we are sending this general information message to all registered patients taking oral contraception.
If you are obtaining either of the above medications privately, we wanted to make you aware of the interaction of them with oral contraception & hormone replacement therapies (HRT)
You should have been informed about this by the person prescribing your medication, but just in case you weren’t, please read the information below.
Oral Contraception can be less effective if you are using either of the weight loss medications and can put you at risk of pregnancy. The advice is that if you are using these injections to switch to a non-oral contraception, such as the depo, implant or IUD, or use extra precautions for the first 4 weeks and for four weeks after each dose increase.
Oral HRT can be less effective when using weight loss injections. The advice is that if you are using these injections to switch to a non-oral HRT
If you are using the injections and have any concerns about the above or would like to change your contraception or HRT, please contact the surgery.
